Organizing My Apartment {v Rules For A Small Living Room}

And so last week I promised you lot a bout of our downtown apartment, and hither it is! Really, I sort of bankrupt my hope because this is really merely a bout of the living room. But it comes with bonus advice for keeping it organized. This is the first post of my "Organizing My Apartment" series. Here are my acme five rules for organizing a small living room.

Rule #1 Cull moveable furniture.

I love having hard wood floors! There are felt pads on the legs of every piece of article of furniture in this room, then it is super easy to slide things around. We can push the chair out of the way if we need more room around the dining room table and we volition even add together a folding card tabular array to make the tabular array bigger for game nights. We also button the table and chairs dorsum against the wall when nosotros need more space to play Kinnect games or have a dance party 🙂  If yous have rug, attempt to stick with article of furniture that isn't super heavy and then yous can push information technology around. Moveable furniture is especially useful if you are like me and constantly want to rearrange your room. I often come up home and start moving things around, only so far this has proven to exist the best use of space.

Rule #2  Add piece of furniture that has multiple uses. This cedar chest stores all kinds of erstwhile memorabilia that I don't really use, only refuse to get rid of–my husband thinks I'm crazy, merely I know I'm not the only one who saves this stuff, correct? Anyways, in that location is an insane amount of stuff packed inside this thing including quondam trophies, photos, bouquets, the quilt my grandma made me but I don't want to ruin, you lot get the movie. The chest hides all this stuff away and keeps information technology safe, AND information technology doubles as seating or shelving. Yous might also consider adding an ottoman that has storage room inside and tin double every bit a table and a chair,

Dominion #3  Use baskets to hide ataxia. I am obsessed with baskets and totes. I seriously enjoy spending time in the alley with all the plastic totes and colorful bins, simply I accept a dominion that I must have a specific use in mind or I tin can't buy information technology. You can too find all kinds of baskets at thrift stores (pay attention to the size and shape – you tin always spray paint information technology if the colour is ugly). I use the large basket in the corner of our living room for blankets, and information technology hides the lesser shelf behind it that is packed with DVDs and video games. The baskets under the Goggle box are also full of video games, and in that location is a small basket on the tabular array by our couch for remotes, game controllers, and odds and ends similar pens, lotion, bobby pins. (Side note: bobby pins mysteriously appear everywhere. No matter how difficult I try to keep them in a certain place, I find them all over! Do you have the same trouble or is it just me?)

Dominion #4  Define specific places for paper. I always terminate up with a heap of newspaper on the couch–magazines, bills, books, notebooks of ideas, newspapers, etc. This mag holder on our windowsill holds all the reading material I haven't gotten to yet, and I love the design (if you tin can find a identify with big windowsills like ours, they are fantastic for shelving and for extra seating when needed). After I am washed reading something, information technology gets recycled, donated, or put on our bookshelf correct away so it is out of the fashion.  I effort to get in a habit to put all the paper back in its abode before I got to bed. This system has eliminated my monstrous stacks of paper that used to be strewn everywhere. (I volition bear witness you my storage solution for mail when we tour the kitchen in a time to come post.)

Rule #v Divide larger spaces with article of furniture. Even though our apartment is fairly small, we have a decent sized living room. It is important to us to have a dining tabular array for eating, playing lath games and being crafty, and this is the only room for it to go in and so we sort of split up the room into a dining nook and the living room area. The 2 sections are separated by the chair and a small table between the chair and burrow. Don't feel confined to keeping piece of furniture against the walls. When you have a pocket-sized apartment with few rooms and as well much article of furniture, you need to become creative! This arrangement actually works out really well for us and is a great apply of the space we accept.

Bonus Rule #6   If you lot ever have a choice, choose an apartment with high ceilings. It volition brand your apartment experience much larger than it really is. We also lucked out with monstrous windows, which permit in all kinds of beautiful sunshine and make our room feel huge.

There yous go! Six rules for organizing your small space. None of these tips are probably shockingly new to y'all, only I hope it helps to encounter how I put them into practice. What tips would you lot add to the listing? Comment beneath!
